Store firewood off the ground, stacked loosely for airflow, covered on top but open on sides. Keep at least 5 feet from your home to prevent pest entry.
Seasoned wood is darker, lighter in weight, has cracks on the ends, and makes a hollow "clunk" sound when two pieces are knocked together. Green wood hisses and steams.
Start with crumpled newspaper, add kindling in a teepee shape, place 2โ3 small logs on top, and light from the bottom. Allow airflow by keeping the damper fully open.
Always use a screen, never leave fires unattended, keep a fire extinguisher nearby, ensure your chimney is cleaned annually, and fully extinguish before sleeping.

Two of our most popular firewood types are oak and almond โ both are exceptional hardwoods, but they each have distinct characteristics that make them ideal for different situations. Here's our honest comparison...
Oak is one of the most widely respected firewood species in the world, and for good reason. It burns hot, long, and produces minimal smoke when properly seasoned. Oak is a dense hardwood that creates an excellent bed of coals โ perfect for maintaining a fire over many hours without constant attention.
Almond is a fruitwood that burns slightly hotter than oak with a distinctly pleasant, mild sweet aroma. It's one of California's most beloved firewood choices because of its clean burn and beautiful flame color. Almond produces less creosote buildup in chimneys than softwoods, making it a chimney-friendly choice.
Both are outstanding choices. Choose oak if you want maximum heat output and the longest burn time. Choose almond if you want a clean, aromatic, beautiful flame with excellent heat. Can't decide? Our Mixed Firewood bundle gives you the best of both worlds!
If you live in the Bay Area and enjoy burning firewood, understanding Spare the Air alerts is essential. Burning wood on prohibited days can result in fines โ here's everything you need to know to stay safe and compliant...
Spare the Air is a program run by the Bay Area Air Quality Management District (BAAQMD) designed to reduce air pollution during periods when weather conditions cause pollutants to build up near ground level. During a Spare the Air alert, burning wood in fireplaces or outdoor fire pits is prohibited throughout the Bay Area โ including San Francisco, San Mateo, and Santa Clara counties.
Spare the Air alerts occur most frequently during winter months โ typically November through February โ when weather inversions trap smoke and particulates close to the ground. However, they can be called at any time of year when air quality is predicted to be unhealthy.
Burning on a Spare the Air day can result in fines starting at $100 for a first offense and increasing for repeat violations. Neighbors can and do report violations โ it's not worth the risk.
At SFFireWood.com, we encourage all our customers to check Spare the Air status before every burn. We provide fully seasoned firewood that produces the least possible smoke when burned correctly โ but no firewood should be burned during a Spare the Air alert regardless of wood type or quality.
Proper firewood storage is the difference between wood that burns beautifully and wood that smokes, hisses, and frustrates. Here's our complete guide to storing your firewood the right way...
San Francisco homes often have limited outdoor space. Here are practical options:
Store firewood at least 5 feet from your home's exterior walls and foundation. Firewood stored directly against the house can become a highway for termites, ants, and other wood-boring insects to enter your home.
Properly stored seasoned firewood lasts 3โ4 years without significant quality loss. SFFireWood.com delivers fully seasoned wood that is ready to burn โ so there's no additional drying time needed. Simply store it properly and it will be ready whenever you need it.
If you notice these signs, it's time to replace your supply. Contact us at [email protected] for a fresh delivery!
Not all firewood is created equal. Burning green or improperly seasoned wood produces excessive smoke, less heat, and dangerous creosote buildup in your chimney. Here are 5 foolproof signs that your firewood is ready to burn...
Freshly cut (green) wood has a bright, vibrant appearance. Properly seasoned wood darkens to a grayish or brown color at the ends. The bark may also look faded, dried, or may be peeling away from the wood.
Green wood is heavy because it's full of moisture โ sometimes up to 50% water by weight. Seasoned wood has lost most of that moisture and will feel noticeably lighter for its size. Pick up two similarly sized pieces and compare โ the lighter one is drier.
Knock two pieces of firewood together. Green wood makes a dull "thud" sound โ it's still dense with moisture. Properly seasoned wood makes a hollow, resonant "clunk" or "crack" sound. This is one of the fastest and most reliable tests you can do.
As wood dries and loses moisture, it naturally contracts and develops cracks โ called "checks" โ radiating outward from the center at the cut ends. These cracks are a reliable visual indicator that the wood has been properly seasoned. The more pronounced the cracks, the drier the wood.
The ultimate test is in the burn. Properly seasoned wood catches fire easily, burns with a bright clean flame, produces minimal smoke after the initial lighting phase, and doesn't hiss or steam while burning. Green wood will hiss, steam, produce heavy smoke, and be difficult to keep lit.
All firewood delivered by SFFireWood.com is fully seasoned and ready to burn. We take pride in the quality of our product โ no green wood, no surprises. If you ever have concerns about the quality of your delivery, contact us immediately at [email protected].
Fascinating facts about firewood, fire, and the Bay Area โ from the people who deliver it to your door.
Not all firewood is created equal. Hardwoods like oak, almond, and hickory burn hotter, longer, and cleaner than softwoods like pine or cedar. Softwoods ignite faster but burn out quickly and produce more creosote โ a sticky residue that builds up in chimneys and can cause chimney fires. SFFireWood.com sells only premium hardwood bundles.
Fresh-cut "green" wood contains up to 50% moisture. Burning it produces more smoke, less heat, and significantly more creosote. Properly seasoned firewood โ dried for 6 to 12 months โ has a moisture content below 20% and burns cleaner, hotter, and more efficiently. All SFFireWood.com bundles are fully seasoned and ready to burn.
California is one of the world's largest almond producers โ and almond wood is a prized byproduct. When almond trees are removed or replaced after their productive years, the wood is harvested for firewood. It burns hot and long, produces a beautiful golden flame, and emits a subtly sweet, pleasant aroma that makes it one of the most beloved firewood choices in the Bay Area.
The Bay Area Air Quality Management District (BAAQMD) issues "Spare the Air" alerts on days when weather conditions trap pollutants close to the ground. On these days, burning wood in fireplaces or wood stoves is prohibited โ even in EPA-certified devices. Always check the BAAQMD app or sparetheair.org before lighting your fireplace. Violations can result in fines.
A cord is the official unit of measurement for firewood โ it's a stack measuring exactly 4 feet wide ร 4 feet tall ร 8 feet long, totaling 128 cubic feet. A "face cord" or "rick" is typically โ of a full cord. A bundle (like ours) is roughly .75 to 1 cubic foot โ perfect for a single fire session. Knowing the difference protects you from overpaying when buying firewood anywhere.
Every fire needs three things: fuel (wood), heat (ignition), and oxygen (airflow). Remove any one of them and the fire goes out. That's why keeping your damper fully open when starting a fire is critical โ restricted airflow is the #1 reason fires don't start or die quickly. Our bundles include fast-igniting kindling to give your fire the perfect head start.
Some things should never go in a fireplace: treated or painted wood (releases toxic chemicals), plywood or particleboard (contains adhesives and formaldehyde), cardboard (creates flying embers), plastic or trash (toxic fumes), and wet or green wood (excessive smoke and creosote). Stick to properly seasoned hardwood โ like ours โ for a safe, clean burn every time.
When sourced responsibly, firewood is considered carbon-neutral โ trees absorb COโ as they grow, and burning releases roughly the same amount they stored. Locally sourced firewood like ours also eliminates the emissions from long-distance transportation. Additionally, buying almond firewood supports California's agricultural industry by utilizing wood that would otherwise go to waste.
Many San Francisco apartments and condos have decorative fireplaces that are either sealed or not approved for wood burning. Before ordering firewood, confirm with your landlord or building management that your fireplace is functional and approved for use. EPA-certified inserts are sometimes required in older buildings. When in doubt, a fire pit on a private patio or backyard is a great alternative!
The National Fire Protection Association recommends having your chimney inspected and cleaned at least once a year โ regardless of how often you use it. Creosote buildup from burning wood (especially unseasoned wood) is the leading cause of chimney fires. A certified chimney sweep can identify cracks, blockages, and creosote buildup before they become hazards. Your fireplace, your safety.
